Snow tires... or rather Mud tires

I happened to read about an interesting technique for rasping the hoof to provide 'treads' for more grip in mud on the barefoothorsecare Yahoo group. Once I told Lauren about it she was game to give it a try with her daughter's horse, Big Boy. The idea is to notch the toes so as to offer the horse something to grip with in the mud.

Yesterday the weather was pleasantly warm but with all the rain we've had the clay was thick and slick. A perfect day for a test drive! Lauren decided to take Suntan out for a ride as well and before getting on notched his toes as well.

Danielle reported that Big Boy felt very secure but in truth he's pretty rugged to start. The one who REALLY appreciated the extra traction was Suntan. In places where she would have expected him to be slipping and flailing he was sure footed.

The traction notches get an A+ from Suntan and Big Boy!
